Not The Death I Was Expecting

November 2024

An exhibition of automatic art ink drawings done between 2021-2022 when a combination of sleep paralysis, bizarre sensory experiences, and neuralgia left me desperate for some way to communicate with and within my body. While rendered almost completely immobile from pain and fatigue, rather than fight it, I decided to channel it and release it through ink on paper. I gave those sensations permission to override conscious thought and talk to me through ink on calligraphy and later whatever paper + pens I could get my hands on through the trading app Bunz.

Art House (Ottawa arts cafe + gallery + performance space) played an important role in this story so it seemed fitting to host the exhibition there.

On November 14 2024 we held a vernissage where I read an excerpt from the volumes and spoke on the paradoxical experience of community as someone with a largely invisible illness/disability.
